  19. Regarding Marc and Dave's exchange a week ago:

  21. It may be that eyes glaze over when the letters SGML are uttered,
  22. but we need it as a way of making rules and drawing limits.  With
  23. SGML I can parse my HTML docs and be confident that any browser
  24. using the HTML DTD (and, let us hope, soon the HTML+ DTD) will
  25. be able to handle my docs and not choke.  They may even
  26. be presented in a way that makes their structure clear by 
  27. typographic means.

  29. All DTDs compromise between semantic and visual markup.  The 
  30. exchange about white space touched on this point.  
  31.  
  32. So the thing to do is enrich the DTD so that reasonable presentation
  33. demands can be met, relying on semantic tagging rather than visual
  34. tagging as much as feasible, then hide the whole SGML layer from writers
  35. who don't want to hear about SGML.  To the extent the markup of our docs
  36. is semantic rather than visual, we're ahead.

  38. After all, the non-Postscript alternative is RTF  (snore) . . .
